A guide to understanding how different oak finishes shape the atmosphere of a space.
In our live-in showroom, many pieces are crafted from solid oak, yet no two feel the same.
The finish of the wood quietly transforms how furniture interacts with light, space and daily life. A dining table in raw oak feels calm and grounded, while the same piece in a darker tone can anchor an entire room.
We explore our different oak finishes in more detail on our ÉTAUDORÉ Wood page, but here we share what we have learned from living with them.
Different oak finishes can completely change the mood of a room
Natural oak: calm, honest and expressive
A natural oak finish reveals the material in its most authentic form. Fully translucent, it allows the original colour of the wood to come through, with all its subtle variations in tone and grain.
In our showroom, the Lianna table in the teenage bedroom is finished in Natural oak. It feels warm, understated and quietly expressive, a surface that reflects the true character of the material without alteration.
Natural oak also ages beautifully, developing a gentle patina over time as it becomes slightly deeper and warmer with exposure to light.

Raw oak: softened and architectural
Our Raw oak finish takes this a step further by introducing a very subtle whitewashed layer. This translucent treatment softens the natural tone of the wood while preserving its grain and texture.
Pieces like the Bernina bed create a calm, architectural foundation. The finish feels stable, timeless and easy to live with, especially in spaces where you want the architecture or textiles to take the lead.

Light / whitewashed oak: soft, luminous and contemporary
A more pronounced whitewashed finish creates a distinctly lighter and more refined look. While still translucent, it gently lifts the natural tone of the wood, resulting in a softer, almost powdery appearance.
Pieces like the L’Argentine dining table and the Uetliberg chairs embody this effect. The finish feels light, calm and quietly modern, particularly when paired with soft textiles, warm neutrals and natural light.
This finish works especially well in interiors where you want to create a sense of openness and clarity without losing the warmth and authenticity of solid wood. Rather than drawing attention to itself, it diffuses light and allows the overall atmosphere to feel brighter and more balanced.

Medium tones: balance and versatility
Medium oak finishes sit comfortably between light and dark, offering warmth without heaviness.
Pieces like the Cervin desk in a mid-tone finish adapt easily to different environments. They provide enough contrast to feel intentional, while remaining flexible as other elements in the room evolve over time.
For many clients, this is the most forgiving option, a finish that works across seasons, lighting conditions and changing interiors.

Dark finishes: depth and presence
Darker oak finishes introduce a very different character, bringing depth, contrast and a more defined visual structure to a space.
In our showroom, the Otemma coffee tables in a deep graphite finish take on a sculptural quality. Similarly, the Areuse highboard in a darker tone anchors the room and creates a sense of quiet focus.
These finishes work particularly well when you want a piece to stand out, not through ornament, but through presence and proportion.

Mixing finishes: a more natural approach
It is not necessary for every piece in a room to match perfectly.
In fact, combining different oak tones can create a more layered and natural interior. A lighter dining table can coexist with darker storage pieces, as long as the overall palette remains harmonious.
We often encourage clients to think in terms of relationships between pieces, rather than uniformity.
The advantage of made-to-order
Choosing a finish becomes much easier when you are not limited to a single option.
At ÉTAUDORÉ, each piece is made to order, which allows for a more considered approach. Clients can explore different finishes, view samples in their own space and take the time to understand how materials respond to light and surroundings.
It is a slower process, but one that leads to more confident and lasting decisions.
