How the shape of a dining table influences movement, atmosphere and everyday living.
A dining table is rarely just a table.
It becomes a place where mornings begin slowly and conversations stretch into the evening. Beyond size and material, the shape of a dining table plays an important role in how a space feels and functions.
Some shapes create structure and symmetry. Others soften a space or encourage more fluid interaction. The right choice depends not only on the size of the room, but also on how you want to live within it.
Rectangular tables: structured and architectural
Rectangular dining tables are often the most intuitive choice, and for good reason.
They create a strong sense of order and naturally define a dining area, particularly in open-plan interiors. Their linear shape works beautifully alongside architectural elements such as kitchen islands, long windows or parallel walls.
In our showroom, the L’Argentine table creates a calm and grounded presence. The softly rounded corners prevent the shape from feeling too rigid, while still maintaining clarity and structure within the room.

Rectangular tables also tend to offer the greatest flexibility for seating capacity, making them ideal for families or larger gatherings.

Round tables: intimate and space-efficient
Round tables change the dynamic of a room immediately.
Without a “head” of the table, conversations feel more balanced and inclusive. The absence of corners also softens movement around the piece, which makes round tables particularly well suited to smaller spaces.
For one of our clients in Klosters, the round Rigi table creates a welcoming centrepiece within a compact mountain apartment. The shape allows the dining area to feel open and easy to move through, while allowing closeness and connection.
Round tables often create a more relaxed atmosphere than rectangular ones. They feel naturally social and are ideal for long dinners, smaller gatherings and spaces where flow matters more than formality.
Extendable round tables add another layer of versatility, allowing the table to adapt as everyday life changes.

Oval tables: softness with presence
Oval tables sit beautifully between round and rectangular forms.
They retain the softness and fluidity of curved edges, while introducing the seating capacity of a larger dining table. This balance often makes oval tables feel elegant without becoming too formal.
In Noemi Gwater Rubino’s home, the Noemi table creates exactly this effect. Its soft oval silhouette gently balances the architecture of the space while giving the dining area a clear sense of presence and proportion.

Oval tables also work particularly well in spaces where you want generous seating without the visual heaviness that can sometimes accompany large rectangular pieces.
When extended, tables like the Rigi naturally transition into a softer oval shape, maintaining visual flow even as the table grows.

Organic shapes: fluid and sculptural
Organic dining tables introduce a very different feeling into an interior.
Rather than following strict geometry, these softer and more irregular silhouettes create a more relaxed and intuitive atmosphere. They feel less like a traditional dining table and more like a sculptural object integrated into everyday life.
The Agata table embraces this approach beautifully. In Raquel’s home from Our Wabi Sabi Home, the shape feels calm, natural and almost effortless within the space.

On our own terrace, paired with the Emma bench, the same table creates a softer and more informal outdoor setting.

Organic shapes work especially well in interiors where softness, movement and materiality are prioritised over symmetry.
They invite a more relaxed relationship with the space around them.
Thinking beyond dimensions
When choosing a dining table, dimensions matter, but shape often matters more than people initially expect.
The same room can feel:
- more open
- more intimate
- more architectural
- more relaxed
simply depending on the geometry of the table within it.
A rectangular table may maximise seating efficiency.
A round table may improve circulation.
An oval table may soften a large room.
An organic table may bring calm to a highly structured interior.
The best choice is about how you want the space to feel over time.
The advantage of made-to-order
At ÉTAUDORÉ, tables can be customised in size, proportion and finish, allowing clients to consider not only what fits physically, but also what feels right spatially and emotionally.
We also create fully custom tables based on our clients’ own ideas and requirements, developing pieces that respond to the specific architecture, dimensions and atmosphere of their homes.
